OK, guys... I KNEW this would generate a great deal of
responses.
All of you should know that NOTHING in this field is
black and white.
Also, maybe some of the responses is based on the fact
that I'm questioning some people's livelyhood.
My only premise was that to many of us rely on the
index to find information at the expense of structure
and organization.
Indexes, in some cases, are required. In some cases,
are a help. However, in some cases, used becuase it's
too difficult to find information lost in the content.
Spend a little more time on the structure of the
content and maybe, just maybe, some of the idexes that
are created can be shorter, less detailed, or not
necessary.
Then if the document has been created right and it
still needs an index, knock yourself out.
I'm now returning to my 5th arrangement of a document
so I can eliminate the need for an index in this
document.
