When I began at my current position, I worked for a QA manager. She was fun
to work for, generous with regard to attendance policies, and generally very
human. I now work for a Product Manager. Boy are things different.
It's not the title, folks, it's the person. Look beyond departmental
politics if you want to get stuff done.
QA, as a department, makes sense for tech writers, at least as much as
Product Management. You have direct access to the people who test the
product, and therefore know more about the big picture than anyone else in
the company. What's more, they are among the few who can tell you the
difference (without politics usually -- if you find the right tester)
between how it SHOULD work and how it DOES work.
Just MHO.
Tom.
