In my time, I've been called a "technical writer," "technical
communicator," "technical editor" (all these first three further
subdivided by "junior," "intermediate" and senior"), "information
designer," "documentation specialist," "publications manager" and
"product manager." Except for the last one (which involves other
duties beyond documentation), none of these titles have changed
what I do, how it's regarded, or how I get paid for it.

To hurl a blinding flash of the obvious into the discussion:
work's work, and, no matter what you call yourself, it still
needs to be done.
