Another point to keep in mind is the "cobbler's children" jobs, that is,
the real work that needs doing for the department but which keeps taking a
back seat to the client work. For instance, someone recently mentioned
their doc department intranet that kept getting the short shrift. Perhaps
a summer student could help with that at whatever level the student felt
competant; writing or organizing content, maybe even basic coding or
pasting wrappers for that sort of project.
Kids are often at least as web savy as we are. They won't necessarily have
the specific detailed skills needed for professional level work, but the
skills they do have are often impressive. ...and if they don't in this
case, well, the cobblers children won't be any worse off and may even be a
step or three closer to having warm feet.
