I think most companies use it because they have to, or they don't have thwe
will or inclination to develop something better.
As far as I'm concerned it is very possibly the most user-unfriendly
concoction I've ever had the displeasure to encounter. Admittedly, you can
pare down the elements to those you actually need to use, but even then it
is extremely confusing.
A well-designed EDD can greatly enhance authoring productivity. Docbook
negatively affects productivity.
