TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
For the 17th billion time the ire of many has been raised over the inane debate
over which tool is better. And for the 17th billion time this debate grows yet
another notch more meaningless.
These are tools - not pets, spouses, or family members. If you are so deeply
in love with a tool that you cannot possibly see the value of any other tool -
you need a swift kick in the head.
And forget the dumb comparisons to wrenches and hammers. A hammer is a
tremendously simple tool in comparison to computer software. This is like
comparing bacteria to humans. The factors that make these complex systems
useful (or useless) are far too complex for a few mouthing fools (including
yours truly) on a tech writer board to figure out.
A true professional can produce beauty from any tool. Only incompetent people
blame their tools for their inability to excel. What you use to produce a
document should be irrelevant. The content is what matters.
And lastly, you will be hard pressed to find a person outside of the tech
writing universe who gives one billionth of a crap about your emotional
attachments to FrameMaker.
If you don't like the tools mandated to you - QUIT! If you can't deal with the
environment before you - LEAVE! It is so tiring to listen to people jabber on
with pointless justifications as to why a company needs to adapt to meet their
needs.
Life ain't fair, kids. If you want to be a success you better find ways to cope
with adversity because complaining will get you absolutely nowhere.
Now get back to work before I tell Mom on you.
