TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I'd also suggest Visio as a vector drawing program. (By the way - it's now
been assimilated by Microsoft.) The UI is geared for dummies, and it doesn't
give you nearly the flexibility of a real drawing program like Illustrator
or FreeHand, but it's quick and dirty, and the output is good enough for
most publications.
The price starts around $200 for the Sloppy Joe version, and goes up to
about $1000 for the Ultra Professional Yeehaw Enterprise Royal Suite
(UPYERS).
