If I understand the issue correctly: Yes, replacing x and y with horizontal
and vertical probably doesn't add much clarity. It is helpful however to
label the axes with words that explain the variables such as x=Months and
y=Gallons sold. Of course you could add arrows at the end of both axes
indicating an increase in months and gallons as you go to the right and
upward. What do you think?
