Add: the company's really just collecting resumes, there's a
preferred candidate, but the company's going through the motions,
the budget changed, permission to hire has been rescinded, and
any of a dozen reasons that have nothing to do with you
whatsoever.
It can't be stressed too often that a person interviewing (or
submitting a manuscript, for that matter) needs a rhinoceros'
hide. You've got to focus on the basic fact of whether you're
hired or rejected, and not worry about anything else. Chances are
you'll never know what really happened.
