TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Your style guide should dictate the use of these terms. If you don't have
one, make your own. We use the "Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical
Documentation," although I do make a few exceptions.
Generally speaking,
- "Select" means to highlight (as in highlight text) or, less often, to
select/choose an option, where "Click" refers to a physical act...clicking
with the primary mouse key. Different actions.
- Web (with an uppercase W) is still the most-preferred spelling in style
guides.
- Internet is usually uppercase when it refers to THE Internet. When it is
used in a very generic form, which is rare, you can use lower case. On the
other hand, the word "intranet" is not capitalized.
