I had this problem as Rick described it. It's a bug in Word 97, addressed
by Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q185980. See http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q185/9/80.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=g
n&FR=0. I didn't bother with the suggested workarounds; I just learned to
live with seeing only the tops of the characters for the duration of my
indexing project.
