I understand that technical writing positions aren't
really all that stable. Most people I know here in
Memphis move around quite often, usually remaining in
a position for around 1 or 2 years.
Part of the reason may be that many writers here are
on contract, since companies don't want to admit that
they have on-going documentation needs.
Of course, I don't know how much this microcosm
reflects the nation or world at large - but, again,
I've gotten the impression that technical writers
everywhere tend to move around quite a bit, mostly
because of money and benefits issues.
Perhaps a good follow up question would be: how many
people are contractors? "Permanent" employees?
Part-time? Freelance? All of these factors affect how
long one expects to remain in his/her current position
of anti-power :}.
