How about: "Press the start button, hold for 1-2 seconds, and then release to.......," or something of that nature? If you're hooked on one of the two in your original question, then DEFINITELY "momentarily press and then release" is the better of the two, IMHO. "Bumping" a start button means virtually nothing.
