TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I admit it. I am a lurker. I read the digest version every morning. I heat
up a bagel, open my Sunny D, and enjoy reading the list. I pick up things
here and there and have found some great websites. I mostly ignore the "my
software can beat up your software" discussions. I also ignore the age-old
debates: active versus passive, one space or two, serif versus sans. Pick
one, use it consistently.
Half of the questions I see are already answered by the time I read to the
end of the list. If I see something where I have relevant experience, I
e-mail the person directly. I do not normally post to the list for a number
of reasons: not timely, lazy, already been said, do not care to be flamed
for having an opinion.
The same intolerance at large in our society also makes an occasional
appearance on the list. While Eric deals with it efficiently, its occurrence
is unfortunate. Tech writing is as much art as science. There is plenty of
room for multiple approaches and views. So, whether we choose tech writing
or it chooses us, we should celebrate the struggle and have sympathy and
tolerance for those who share our profession.
