TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I agree that the ability to *find* information is as important as being able to pull it out of your own brain (if not more so). But there are some things you need to *know* (for example, it's a lot more difficult to *find* information if you don't *know* how to do a Boolean search). I'll admit, I was shocked that a majority of people under 40 couldn't answer Amran's little quiz. But my own ignorance in other areas is probably equally shocking to someone.
Veering back on topic... in my own work (education), I'm using less "here is a list of things you need to know" and more "here is how to find the things you need to know, since they are constantly changing." Anyone else?

PS Albert Einstein said it was a waste to memorize data that could be easily looked up and therefore refused to memorize his own phone number -- is this true or apocryphal?

more important than facts, IMHO, is the ability to find out the
information. There is *so* much information that we need to
know today, just to manage our day-to-day lives, and the amount
of information is increasing at an incredible rate.
