TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
What does it mean when people who are being critical of those who don't
think critically give credence to a wholly unscientific survey (no
disrespect, Amram, but asking your coworkers five questions does not a valid
survey make) or rehash the same old "the world's going to pot because of
those young people today" argument? Like people haven't been saying that for
thousands of years. And yet, as a species, we keep learning more about the
world around us, improving our standard of living, educating more of our
offspring....
I think that as long as we allow people to breed freely and care for their
own, there are probably going to be stupid, unmotivated people who could
care less about how critical thinking, knowing what the 13 stripes represent
or about anything else beyond what pop culture plops in their laps might
improve their lives. And you know what, those people don't care one whit
that you think they need to stop watching TV and read a book. If you want
everybody to be just as smart as you and to know and care deeply about the
same things your know and care about, start a cloning program and surround
yourself with yourself. After steeping for the last year in the
well-educated monoculture of Silicon Valley, I'm so glad to be back in
Portland where I meet people with a greater variety of experiences and
views. Smart ones, dumb ones, I find that I can almost always learn
something from people if I don't look down on them because their education
is different from mine.
For the record, I'm sub-40 and knew all the answers to Amram's quiz. Of
course Easter is the holiest day of the Christian year. If Christ had died a
natural death, Christianity wouldn't exist. Anybody who disagrees must be an
uneducated heathen who can't think critically<g>.
