It's like any professional organization; - you get out of it what
you put into it. If I'm going to take myself seriously and expect
others to do the same, I need to MAKE time for theory, to keep up
with what's happening in the industry, and to know what others are
doing.
I admit that I don't have as much time as I'd like to spend on it,
but it's important that I do what I can. The STC helps with that.
By providing constant looks into the field, it minimizes the time I
have to spend by giving me the higher-level view of things so that
I can see the trends that are affecting me and spend my time on
those.
And the networking benefits alone can be well worth the dues. But,
as you said, YMMV.
That writer does the most, who gives his reader
the most knowledge, and takes from him the
least time. -Coulton
