There is a related type of analysis in Linguistics, known as Discourse
Analysis. Discourse Analysis has several sub-fields, such as conversation
analysis and ethnography, and is mainly focused on spoken and written
communication (not just literature), and is definitely relevant to technical
writing.

According to a quote on www.criticism.com, discourse analysis "on the one
hand includes the study of linguistic forms and the regularities of their
distribution and, on the other hand, involves a consideration of the general
principles of interpretation by which people normally make sense of what
they hear and read." 

Technical writers can benefit from understanding the "principles of
interpretation" people use to make sense of what they read.
