Bryan, also the Bible, Koran, Torah, works of Confucius, etc. also would
make good additions to the technical writer bookshelf and serve as worthy
philosophical and moral contrasts to the atheist selfishness of Rand.
Reading a variety of viewpoints enhances critical thinking skills.
I think that at least some Ayn Rand should be required reading in all our
schools.
Atlas Shrugged would be especially effective against the attitudes you
mention, but it would be nearly impossible to get today's students to read a
book that long.
Her essay "Philosophy: Who Needs It?" [for those who haven't read it, the
answer is "everyone"] would be a good place to start.
A recent thread asked what books we thought every technical writer's
bookshelf should have. Here are my suggestions:
Atlas Shrugged
The Fountainhead
Anthem (if for no other reason, read this [very short] book for its
interesting perspective on personal pronouns)
The Virtue of Selfishness.
Philosophy: Who Needs It?
