The IBM XML and Web Services Development Environment is the first
development environment that creates open, platform-neutral Web services
for deployment across heterogeneous systems. This tool allows HTML, Java,
SQL and XML developers to quickly extend existing e-business applications
so that they can deliver business informational Web services. Database
developers can also use SQL as a programming language to quickly build
data-aware Web services. Web developers can create Web services with
minimal knowledge of Java, XML or SOAP.
Web services are self-describing, self-contained, modular applications that
can be mixed and matched with other Web services to create innovative
products, processes, and value chains. Web services are Internet
applications that fulfill a specific task or a set of tasks that work with
many other web services in an interoperable manner to carry out their part
of a complex work flow or a business transaction. In essence, they enable
just-in-time application integration and these web applications can be
dynamically changed by the creation of new web services.

Using WSDL in SOAP applications
An introduction to WSDL for SOAP programmers
This article provides a brief background and technical introduction to
WSDL. Knowledge of XML and XML Namespaces is required and some familiarity
with XML Schemas and SOAP is useful.Web Services Description Language
(WDSL) is a new specification to describe networked XML-based services. It
provides a simple way for service providers to describe the basic format of
requests to their systems regardless of the underlying protocol (such as
Simple Object Access Protocol or XML) or encoding (such as Multipurpose
Internet Messaging Extensions). WSDL is a key part of the effort of the
Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) initiative to
provide directories and descriptions of such on-line services for
electronic business.
Tutorial: Web services -- the Web's next revolution
Web services are a new breed of Web application. They are self-contained,
self-describing, modular applications that can be published, located, and
invoked across the Web. Web services perform functions, which can be
anything from simple requests to complicated business processes. A sample
Web service might provide stock quotes or process credit card transactions.
Once a Web service is deployed, other applications (and other Web services)
can discover and invoke the deployed service.
Rod Smith looks at how far Web services has come and outlines some of the
coming plans for this technology from the developers working on the
specifications and the software.
