I haven't enjoyed "free" travel or lodging (well, not
from conferences), but I was surprised to hear that
the STC charged its speakers admittance. Regardless of
whether a discount was involved, I think it's a slap
in the face to have to pay to attend a conference at
which you've been asked to speak.

I'm not sure I'd want to hang out in a VIP lounge with
other speakers - at least not for any great length of
time. I think it's valuable to get to know the
attendees as well, as you never know who'll be there
(your next co-worker, your next boss, your next client...).
