Connie Giordano asked:
<snip>
Ex or current developers--I have a question for you-- do you routinely get
asked about the tools and versions when being recruited for a position? Or
is it assumed that you say you know C++ so you must know it?
The last time I applied for a development job, the interviewer/manager
asked my expertise in certain areas related to the position. I stressed
that my database skills were the strongest, and of course I knew SQL. He
confirmed this by asking me to create a "select" statement (for you
non-db-types, that's a simple query). He also asked me to define such
Object-Oriented concepts as composition, and assessed my UNIX skills (help!
where are the man pages!).
He appreciated my honesty (to tie this to another thread) when I told him
where I needed more time to get up-to-speed, and where I was proficient
enough to jump right in. Even though it was not the best interview I'd
given, I was still offered the job.
