Subject:The Problem with STC From:"Victoria Sharpe" <vmsharpe -at- prodigy -dot- net> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 12 Dec 2000 14:51:17 -0600
In my opinion, the bashing of STC as a field is not fair and I believe it is
partially responsible for the growth in so many academic programs and in our
continuing recognition.
I am wondering how many with degrees in technical communication feel this
way?
I believe that people are misunderstanding the purpose of the conference and
of the organization. Speakers are not paid experts because most attendees
come from many diverse areas and this provides people with new ideas
concerning technology, writing, and even new trends in employment. I
certainly don't pay to attend and hear one or two people speak. I attend
every session I can and come back refreshed with new ideas for both
workplace practice and research. Even if I do attend a panel that is not
completely new to me, I see that as a great opportunity to take what I do
and reflect on my experiences vs. someone else's. Of course, I am interested
in the field in a much larger sense than who is the best documentation
specialist and how does she do it, even though I would find that a learning
experience as well. The spirit of the big conference is a sharing of ideas
for those of us who do want to know what is going on and where our field is
heading. I believe that the people in STC offices best represent the spirit
of our field and take its growth very seriously.
JMHO,
Victoria Sharpe
