TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I just finished an introductory course in FM, and the instructor
recommended that we try picking out documents from among those we
encounter every day, or in some target genre, and attempt to recreate
the layout in Frame. To this I would add trying to find ones that look
as if they'd be tough to do in Frame, just to put some extra "stretch"
into the exercise. Doing them more than once (i.e. practising) might not
be a bad idea in case a skeptical interviewer (i.e. one who might doubt
that you did the work yourself) asks for a blow-by-blow account or a
live demonstration of how it's done.
I like the research part of Randall's idea, too. Time permitting, it
appears to be a good way to show off additional skills.
Sit down and write a project for yourself using Frame. Do the research,
write it in chapters, set-up and use the book features, set-up a TOC and
a basic index, use cross-refs, and some variables, use a few tables,
set-up at least 3 additional master pages (beside the default right and
left) and apply them throughout, get to know the paragraph, character
and table designers, use paragraph numbering.
