It strikes me, after reviewing a number of posts in this thread, that the
STC should be put in contact with a few experienced Science Fiction
Convention runners. (There may even be a few with concom experience within
the sound of my keyboard right now, dare I suggest even a SMOF or two?)
It certainly sounds to this STC-outsider that there is much they could
learn about how to treat presenters. Money is just money; ego-boo can be
just as, or more, valuable when properly applied. You have to give a little
to get a little. You want speakers to do more preparation? Offer them an
incentive, rather than giving them an unalloyed burden. Make a case why
they should put off doing work they are paid to do in order to attend a
conference which will require more of them than other attendees who paying
the same expenses they are.
Concoms are long accustomed to doing the impossible on a budget of "two
baloney sandwiches and a glass of milk." <Beaucoup trivia points, and a tip
of my cap, if you can identify the source and context of *that* quote.>
