Somehow, I just don't like "The ZZ dialog displays."
Sometimes regardless of the grammar rule, (and I'm not 100% that it
is truly passive) ya go with what works best, and in this case, I
think it does. This is usualy the first step of a series of steps to
accomplish a process. In the instructions, every procedure is
followed by the result, usualy something like this:
1) From the XX menu, click the YY btton. The ZZ dialog is displayed.
2) From the AA text field in the ZZ dialog, click the down
arrow and select BB from the menu. The CC popup menu is
displayed.
3) From the CC popup menu, highlight DD and click the OK button.
The EE utility is initiated.
In this case, unless you can show me a way to have it clearer to the
user, I'll keep it the way it is. However, I AM interested in your thoughts.
