TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I read with great interest the posts on Tech writers
salaries. I am going into my first fulltime Tech
Writer job. After a couple months of looking, in one
week I received three job offers.
I was so pleased with the first offer that I verbally
accepted it on the phone. It offered 57,5 to start
with a 2K signing bonus and stock options. This job is
in another city a few hours away from where I am now.
I used to live there, have more friends there and I
know that the cost of living is slightly higher and
distances to travel longer. I would be the only tech
writer in that particular department so I think I
would be able to influence directions of projects,
have more flexibility as well as responsibility. The
salary of an offer in the city I am in now is higher
at 60K and I would be a member of a technical writing
team. Both companies seem interesting, the one in the
other city being an Internet-related business and the
local one an established software company.
I am having a difficult time deciding which one to
take and I am hoping to get some feedback about how
others evaluate job offers and consider the most
important factors in choosing a fulltime job. Would
you move to a more expensive city for a lower base
salary? Does the possibility of having more
responsibility and possibly more growth potential make
up for a lower salary? Is working on a team a better
way to learn than flying solo on a job?
Thanks in advance for any comments to help the
decision I must make in two days (yikes!).
