Walter asked about how best to accomplish both a main help
system and a context-sensitive single-pane help on NT, using
a compiled HTML Help (.chm). Currently, this is not working
the way he feels users need.
It is interesting to note that even the folks in Redmond have
used a cute workaround. The main help system for some of the
applications is written in HTML Help and the context
sensitive popups are written in WinHelp. This works well,
is responsive, and uses the strengths of both types of help.
I recommend this approach. There is little risk since NT 4.0
and Windows 2000 both ship with both browser engines (the
IE components that produce the tri-pane browser used in HTML
Help and the older WinHlp32). Microsoft is likely to continue
to ship both browser for the foreseeable future.
