I'm a newbie here too, but I can let you know what I did. I finished
off 22 years in the USAF and then went back to college to get a BA
with an English major and computer science minor and followed with
a MA in Communications and Multimedia.
There weren't schools near hear that offered tech writing
specifically, so I sort of rolled my own. It took a while, but I do have
a job as a tech writer (6 months now) mostly doing online Internet
help docs. In my case my educational background fit in just right.
