It's funny, but the thread I started has kicked up a
bit of dust. And the funny thing is, I'm rather
conservative, and do believe the system of supply and
demand works very well. And that, in a certain way,
people who position themselves to make the money they
want, do "deserve" it. Those who haven't figured out
how to maximize their potential earnings, but aren't
killing themselves physically or mentally to make the
money they do, shouldn't complain. They should figure
out how to make that money, or just philosophical
about it and figure out what they are gaining in
exchange for a little less money.
I agree with Kay Ethier, I should work my hardest in
whatever I do. I may have given offense by indicating
that I don't work my hardest. I forgot when I wrote,
"I've worked MUCH HARDER for less," that people on
this list (naturally) don't know to what kind of work
I was comparing my tech-writing job.
Throughout my twenties, I regularly worked 18-hour
days in high heels - outside for much of it in the
rottenest weather you can imagine. I worked
all-nighters as a flight attendant for a lousy airline
in the Upper Midwestern US. 3-4 hours of sleep. 18
hour days. Supplemented the job with cocktail
waitressing during the day. Temp work sometimes.
Mean, tired, uncomfortable passengers ready to kill
the first person in a uniform they could grab without
witnesses. Freezing cold airplanes. 110 degree heat
in the summer in those same airplanes. Required to
wear high heels in 20-below weather. (One flight
attendant lost her toes to frostbite.) Bronchitis all
the time. After 7 years of this (I love aircraft - I
also joined the National Guard and became a helicopter
mechanic during this time to supplement my income, and
serve my country.)
Sorry, but the ONLY way I can work harder at this
tech-writing assignment is if I DON'T GO HOME AT ALL.
And if I bring myself and my computer out into the
snow to work. And bash my head in with hammer. And
eat cockroaches.
That's what I meant by I used to work harder (for less
than 1/4th of what I make now). I'm so lucky in this
job, I can hardly stand myself. Now, back to work,
ME. <g>
