As a member who did technical writing for years without having the title, I
add this caveat:
Get permission to add items to your portfolio in the event that you write
proprietary items.
I had *no* legitimate impressive samples for most of my career because so
much of what I did was considered confidential. [Fortunately for me, my
present employers were able to estimate the quality of my work from our
interviews, correspondence, and from the content of a Web site I'd worked on
(as a volunteer, for the experience).]
