Take your pick:
- I don't remember.
- I don't think it's really comparable to this job.
- I'd rather not say. It's private.

- Don't worry: I've researched the salary scales at your company,
and I'd find them quite acceptable.

Obviously, not all of these will work all the time, but, depending
on circumstances,you can come up with lots more. I suppose that you
could even lie about your previous salary, although personally I
wouldn't care to. A working relation that starts with a lie isn't
likely to be based on mutual respect.
