The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've used a different technique as well as labeling the code. If the help
is to be viewed on a static system (one that does not change from view to
view on an end-user's system), I use "" around code and also put it in a
different font. Usually I use courier to make the quoted code stand out.
Also, in the "Conventions" section of the manual is usually a place where
you explain why certain text is boldfaced, highlighted, in courier, etc.
But, that's just what I do.
while your question is highly contextual, a quick answer is label the code
as appropriate.
If you are showing a code fragment to exemplify some function use or
construct, then you probably don't need to label it as coming from a larger
function, etc. However, if you need to provide some context for the example
code to make sense, then you should label it. Labels make sense when they
add something (which may include the ability to search for the code example
by label). Otherwise, they are only there to satisfy our anal desires to
categorize.
