Actually, yes, sort of.
I once found myself at the front of a walk-a-thon event with another fellow and, as we were pacing each other nicely, we struck up a conversation. Turns out he was an education professor who year after year was sending secondary English teachers out into the world to spread the gospel of Whole Language. We had a, um, lively debate about the value of that approach. I did my best to convince him of the error of his ways, but I'm not sure I persuaded him to change.
I followed that up with a letter to the chairman of the English department in my local school district (where my own kids were enrolled), and didn't have much effect there, either, I'm afraid.
But at least I tried, right?
Dick
