This discussion reminds me of my favourite indexing joke (well, actually,
my only indexing joke):

My sons used to be huge fans of the cartoonist Gary Larson, and they bought
all his Far Side books. All Far Side cartoons consisted of one panel, each
appearing on a separate page in the book.

In one of the books, there was an index - but not a particularly useful
one. Under the heading "A", there were no index entries. Same for "B", "C",
and so on, all the way down to "T". Under "T", there was an entry "The one
about the dog and the cat", followed by "The one about the husband and the
wife", and so on. (Well, something like that - I can't remember exactly.)
Every single index entry started with "The one about..."!

I thought it was hysterical!
