Sorry, I could not figure out a better way to describe what I wanted her to
do. Here is the long version...
My daughter had written her essay on what she does to get ready for the
holidays. The page contained several sentences describing things that she
did. I wanted to know how many paragraphs she had written at that time. She
looked at me like I asked her where we were going to put our new pet
elephant, that is as if I was crazy. She did not know where a paragraph
would begin and end. She could not tell me that a paragraph usually
expresses a single thought, starting with a topic sentence. --- etc. Isn't
that basic English? Shouldn't young kids be taught this kind of information
in grade school?

I'm in the boat with her. What DOES "detirmine" a paragraph mean?
