Editing is a good way to learn about the topic and how to write. This is why
editing positions are a great place for tech writers to begin their careers.
Funny, I always thought it was the other way around. The best technical editors I know started out as technical writers, and I always recommend that aspiring editors begin their careers as writers.
My main point was that the act of editing and the act of writing are not
synonymous. Editors have a much different set of responsibilities than writers.
I think a lot of places mash the two jobs together, when in fact they are quite
distinct.
I agree that the two jobs aren't synonymous, although there is often a lot of overlap. And as you say, a lot of companies don't make a distinction between the two, expecting the writers to edit each other's work or -- worse -- edit their own.
