TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Maybe lack of sleep is causing me to have a shorter-than-average Adbusting
fuse today, but Martha asked about the capabilities of the tools she was
already using. Everybody said "Download SnagIt!" (which also happens to buy
a lot of ad space on TechWr-L; maybe now they can afford to cut down their
ad expenditure here?)
The fact is that a lot of tech writers, myself included, do NOT spend many
mindless hours taking pictures of the screen and manipulating the images.
And if you don't need a tool, you're not likely to buy it...Then again, a
lot of people who DO need a tool and STILL don't pay for it. Whether or not
it has saved them time and money on a logarithmic scale does not seem to
matter. They may not intend to steal, but stealing software is looked on
rather casually in a lot of businesses I know, plus jumping through hoops to
get a purchase approved, even for a measly $50, can be a deterrent for a
tool that you use for 30 seconds every two weeks.
I ask questions often enough on this darn list that I should be able to
contribute what little I know without getting shamed for it.
Buh-buy!
