Now me:
I have entered and won STC publication competitions. I have also served
as a judge. There are benefits from sitting on both sides of the fence.
As a competitor, it is eye-opening and rewarding to receive feedback
from your peers, whether you win an award or not. If you win, your
company can boast "award-winning documentation", your value goes up
a notch or two in the eyes of your collegues in development and
marketing, and that certificate makes a big splash in your portfolio.
As a judge, you have the opportunity to see what others are doing
and to take a long, hard look at another author's approach to
documentation. The experience broadens your horizons considerably.
Being a pubs competition judge doesn't hurt your resume any, either.

The STC pubs competitions that I've been involved with have been
extremely fair and impartial.
