Let me caution you on using another job offer to renegotiate your current
position. Although this tactic often works in the short term, it will change
the way you are viewed in the company, and your prospects there in the long
term. You will be considered less reliable and loyal than your counterparts;
even the ones that legitimately resign and are lured back under duress.
I believe in a more up front approach:
* request what you want, and if that fails
* indicate what you need (without threatening that you will look for other
work), and if that fails
* look for other work that will offer you either what you need, or what you
want
When you resign, remind them that you made it clear what you needed and try
not to be lured back unless you are really convinced it will be worth it.
