In the journalism world, the executive editor is higher up the ladder than
the managing editor. If there's a just plain "editor" he or she is above the
managing editor too. A copy editor in journalism is more or less equivalent
to an editor in tech writing. Generally speaking, the copy editor reports to
the managing editor, who reports to the editor, who reports to the executive
editor (if there is one), who may or may not report to the publisher.
