My experienced with telecommuting support the
make-sure-they-are-a-good-employee-first school.
A co-worker told me of his first telecommuting job
and admitted that he worked less than 15 hours a
week for his 50K programmers pay check. He's still
a goof off in the office, just less so.
A former co-worker is now employed and a large
firm doing project management for out of state
jobs. He pulls a 6 digit paycheck and brags to
friends that he puts in less than *5* hours a
week. Just enough to answer email and phone calls.
He has an internet business and also pulls a
paycheck from his wife's business, where he spends
most of his time.
On the other hand, another programmer where I
currently work was the most conscientious guy in
the office, moved out of state for his wife's
career, and began telecommuting. It has worked
great. He is still the most conscientious
employee.
Depends on the person.
