This sounds like something that happened to our office manager here. The likely
culprit is a corrupt Data key in the Registry.
IF your friend (or you, or anyone else) has the courage to go into the Registry,
The culprit is in:
HKEY_CURRENT USER > Software > Microsoft > Office > Word > Data
Rename the Data key to Old Data, or whatever. BTW, be sure Word is closed.
Exit the Registry and reopen Word. If it's the corrupt Data key, all the
toolbars and menus should be there. You can then go back into the Registry and
delete the original Data key. When you get rid of it, either by deleting or
renaming it, Word has to default back to the application defaults. The reason
uninstalling and reinstalling didn't cure the problem is that uninstall never
seems to clean out all the Registry entries properly. You'd think software
creators could do that, but it doesn't seem to work that way.
Good luck!
