Help: '97 to 2000 Access question

I need help from any Microsoft guru! I WAS planning to install Office 2000
on my home office computer. My new workplace has Office '97 on their
network with no current plans to upgrade in the near future. I'm employed
at a large medical facility currently undergoing cost cuts and was informed
that Office 2000 is an impossibility.  Obviously a PC is out of the question.

I've created several custom '97 Access databases and Word projects at work,
editing them several times a week at home. What will happen to those
database or Word designs and content if I upgrade my home computer to
Office 2000; then edit back and forth using the two versions? Am I wreaking
havoc in doing this?

THE BIG QUESTION: Do I keep Office '97 at home until my workplace upgrades?
BTW I do love this new position, so leaving is out of the question for now.
