Funny, when I think of the word, matrix, I now think of the movie. <g> Any
way, I strongly suggest you point your colleague to a dictionary.
As best said by the trusty Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary
(http://www.m-w.com/), a matrix is "a rectangular array of mathematical
elements (as the coefficients of simultaneous linear equations) that can be
combined to form sums and products with similar arrays having an appropriate
number of rows and columns."
I hopes this helps.

Subject: nitpicky word question
Hi, I am a list reader who is interested in hearing opinions on a rather
picky but relevant (I think) word differentiation issue -
what's the difference, technically speaking, between a 'table' and a
'matrix'? I have a colleague who likes to refer to everything put into
tabled format as a 'matrix'. I, on the other hand, prefer to call a table a
table.
any quick & easy ways to identify the difference?
thanks for your thoughts,
jenny
