Here's a thought that I have yet to read. My apologies if it's too
"touchy-feely," but, hey, it's a viewpoint to consider.
If I would feel great by getting a vendor's certification in ProductB,
[e.g., ACE in FrameMaker], I would do it for me. Not for an employer. Just
for me. Same for a technical writing certificate. If I would really like to
get one, for me, I will do that.
In my local STC chapter, one of the members is a professor with an
outstanding reputation in our very large, urban community. He's going to
retire soon. I want to take one class with him because:
a) He's a highly-respected TW instructor, and I will learn useful concepts
from him.
b) He's has an awesome, quirky sense of humor that makes you laugh so hard
you cry (recently demonstrated at one of our STC chapter meetings.)
c) He's going to retire soon.
