Actually, as long as you view the resulting HTML in Internet Explorer (and a recent version at that), the output is quite remarkably attractive.
It's generally an unsafe assumption, however, that documents viewed on the web will only be viewed in IE.
Word 2000, by the way, doesn't do a much better job than the earlier versions of eliminating the proprietary tags--even with the free add-on filter.
By contrast, Word produces perfectly acceptable, fully hyperlinked PDF using Adobe's PDFMaker macro (included with the full version of Acrobat).
