This was sent to me but intended for the list. It confirms what I said, but is MUCH better than my message was. (To me, the most important factor is that I can go out of network if need be, and that Aetna's network contains such a large list of hospitals and doctors (including every doctor and specialist I would choose if needed). Kaiser also sounds excellent, but I do not believe that it is available in NYC. Here's the message:

I use NWU too. The National Writers Union provides Health, Dental, Vision,
and Life as a package deal. I'm paying the exact rates today that I paid for
COBRA when I left my old job, and I'm getting more for my money here. My
plan is a combination PPO/POS, so I can go out of network.

You have to be a member, but the cost of the membership is well worth it to
get the insurance. I've been VERY pleased.

The only ones with which I'm familiar are the plans available from IEEE and
from the National Writers' Union. The latter uses Aetna/US Health Care, a
POS rather than HMO. All I've needed were checkups and periodic referrals
to my ophthalmologist for routine checkups, but I've been very satisfied.
