Subject:ISO Document Control for Outside Authored Manuals From:"C. Koopman" <cjkoopman -at- home -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Tue, 27 Mar 2001 00:02:32 -0800
George is concerned that modified documents, which serve the needs of the
individual user, will no longer be ISO compatable. "Technicians usually work
with a "bench copy" of the official text. These manuals are liberally
sprinkled with handwritten notes, written by and for the tech."
I have been making a series of upgrades to the ISO manuals that are used by
the engineers and trouble-shooters in the systems management group. I
treasure those yellow stickies and handscrawled notes because they have
given me a starting place for upgrqading the manuals. Some of the original
manuals were written several employees prior to the ones using them
now--meanning they are at least several years obsolete. People hide their
books because parts of them are still usefull, and when they pull them out
to show me, they say, "Remember---this book doesn't exist."
I'm just re-incorporating all their efforts to fit the instructions to the
different contingencies, and they seem very happy about it. It's a mutual
gratitude dynamic, as far as I'm concerned.
