TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Normally, I warmly encourage people who want to become tech writers.
BUT...
I've also had to clean up several messes left by supposedly aspiring tech
writers who actually were "starving artists" who were just doing tech
writing to pay the rent until they got their big break.
If Colin's brother wants to work in films, then he should contact one of the
many firms that produce technical video/film, either independently or as
part of a larger corporate entity. (Look at the winners of the STC
International Technical Video Competition for examples.) With his
background, he has a unique set of skills to offer, which few technical
communicators can match (which translates into more $$$, which is what he's
basically after). He's also lacking a set of skills that most tech comms
have. So he should play to his strengths.
